Head to head with Wesley Brown from Freshly Fermented

February 12th 2020

Freshly Fermented offer a wide range of organic & vegan certified cultures, carefully grown and cared for with love. We are proud to offer you the largest selection of organic & vegan fermented food cultures in the UK.

We spoke to Wesley Brown from Freshly Fermented, about what Freshly Fermented are working on now, the future ambitions for their company and what they like most about being based at Fareham IC!

1.How did you start your company?

I started the Freshly Fermented from home in my kitchen in 2017 as a side project while working a full-time job as a web developer and graphic designer. I initially started selling fermented food cultures on eBay. I remember my wife telling me that I would “never sell that weird stuff to anyone”. I sold out the same day! I realised I might be onto something and started building an online brand for the products and branching out into all kinds of fermented food starters.
By the start of 2018 my wife had quit her job and looked after the business while I still worked a full time job. By the end of that year, I decided to also quit my job and just focus on Freshly Fermented full time.
We took on a workshop unit in 2019 at the Fareham innovation centre and the rest is history. We now employee 3 other staff members and we just go from strength to strength. We are now one of the largest suppliers of fermented food starters in the UK.

2.What are you working on at the moment?
We are currently busy working on a new range of freeze-dried products that we hope to roll out to organic, vegan and zero waste shops this year. We aim to break out of the E-commerce B2C world and into both B2B and retail shops.

3.What do you like about Fareham Innovation Centre?
The innovation centre has been a crucial part of the growth of the business. It’s great that everything is included in the price. For a startup company, it simplified things and allowed us to just focus on what we are doing. The staff are really helpful and it’s great to be based alongside some other really forward-thinking businesses as neighbours. We feel part of a growing community and everyone is always impressed with the look of the building.

4.What projects/ambitions do you have for the future of your company?
We have just expanded and taken on a new unit at the centre. We aim to continue to grow and fill that unit with staff over the next 6 months. We are merging with two other companies in the same remit to bring further product lines to our range.
